Lewis & Clark Library - Week of the Young Child
10:30 AM
Lewis and Clark Library
Description:
Your Lewis & Clark Library is joining with several other local agencies to celebrate the Week of the Young Childâ„¢ April 24th-28th. The Week of the Young Childâ„¢ is an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, and families.
Lewis & Clark Library Children's Librarian, Marissa Bazan, has an array of fun early literacy programs and events planned, “We're so excited for a week-long celebration of our youngest learners. We will kick the week off with our ever popular, Books & Babies.”

Books & Babies is an early literacy program geared towards babies and toddlers that focuses on the five early literacy practices of Play, Sing, Read, Talk, and Write. During the Week of the Young Child, Books & Babies will explore arts, music (complete with bubbles to dance with), and crafts, including a tactile experience with the rice table. Join the fun on Monday, April 24th from 10:30-11:30AM. The program will repeat at 1:30PM and again on Tuesday, April 25th at 10:30AM. Caregivers must attend program with child.

The celebration continues with Read, Scribble, Draw, and Snack on April 24th from 3-4PM. For grades K-5. Read, Scribble, Draw, and Snack is a casual opportunity to read and talk books, get crafty, color and draw, and enjoy snacks. Bring a book or browse the books on hand. Craft supplies and snacks provided.

Preschool Story Time is an opportunity for preschool aged children to enjoy stories and songs in a fun setting. Again, the five early literacy practices of Play, Sing, Read, Talk, and Write are emphasized through fun stories, rhymes, and songs. Hosted on the Story Steps in the Children's area, the 30 minute program is for preschoolers and their caregivers. Story time will be at 10:30AM on Wednesday, April 26th and will repeat on Thursday, April 27th.

Bazan recently added a new early literacy program at the Lewis & Clark Library, Story Time Yoga for Preschoolers. A concept that is receiving a lot of attention among educators and early childhood psychologist, research indicates a strong link between movement and literacy. Social-emotional learning programs, such as yoga, have a tremendous impact on a child's developing literacy skills. Bazan explains that “reading to young children during a yoga class improves their understanding and subsequently, their literacy skills as children embody the stories.” Geared for preschool aged children, this 30 minute program offers safe, simple, and fun yoga poses through stories. This is a parent and child event. Please bring a large bath towel or yoga mat with you and wear comfortable clothes. Story Time Yoga for Preschoolers will be held on Friday, April 28th at 10:30AM. Registration is required by contacting the Library at 447-1690.

Children attending literacy events during the Week of the Young Child will receive early literacy goodie bags provided by the Early Childhood Coalition.

In addition to the activities planned at the Library, several children's agencies are offering children's activities throughout the month to tie in with the NAEYC Week of the Young Child.
Exploration Works, Montana Children's Trust Fund, the National Guard, Youth Connections Coalition, the Early Childhood Coalition, the YMCA, Downtown Helena, and others will be hosting events throughout the week geared towards early childhood themes and issues. Kids, don't miss the Passport for Literacy Downtown or Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA on April 29th from 10AM to 2PM.
