Rush to the Klondike exhibit
1:00 PM
Jefferson County Museum, 9 N Main St. Clancy
Rush to the Klondike exhibit Description:
An exhibit of late nineteenth century engravings entitled "Rush to the Klondike" will be on display at the Jefferson County Museum in Clancy, Montana, from January 25 - May 3, 2014.
The 38 vintage images illustrating the 1898 gold rush to the Yukon Territory of Canada are drawn from Lee Silliman's collection of original engravings depicting the frontier era mining rushes of the American and Canadian West.
These Klondike gold rush images were published in old periodicals such as Harper's Weekly, The Illustrated London News, and The Graphic. They skillfully illustrate the frenzied stampede of miners who flocked to the Yukon gold fields, in the face of manifest hardships on the trail and against odds stacked steeply against them once they arrived. The images of these stalwart men--and a few hearty women--were recorded with brush and camera, and vividly paint the story of North America's last mad gold rush. Some of the images are handsomely hand tinted. How the aspirants traveled over the many difficult routes to the Klondike, and what life was like once arriving in the gold regions of the far North Country are graphically illustrated. Augmenting the images are verses by the famous poet Robert Service, who skillfully immortalized the brawling, colorful characters of the Klondike with his Yukon tales.
The museum is open Friday and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. The public is cordially invited at no charge to visit the museum.
