Line/Break Summer Ceramics Exhibition Description:
TURMAN LARISON contemporary presents

Line/Break

July 17 - August 15 2015

Turman Larison contemporary kicks off it's 15th summer ceramics show with three accomplished artists, Lauren Gallaspy, Giselle Hicks, and Kala Stein.

Artists Lauren Gallaspy, Giselle Hicks, and Kala Stein create work that centers on the strength and precariousness of everyday objects. Line/Break implies both a continuance and a disruption. It is what happens at the end of a line of poetry, but also what happens at the edge of a pot as glaze breaks on its surface, or in the gentle separation of a line scratched through slip, or the fuzzed-out facet of a painted diamond on a porcelain cup. Line/Break is a collection of work that attempts to engage with permanence and impermanence at once, using formal elements to express personal points of view.

Lauren Gallaspy is an active artist with a rigorous studio practice in both sculptural and functional ceramics as well as painting and drawing, she has exhibited widely in galleries, museums, and at conferences nationally and internationally since 2004. She is an Assistant Professor of Art in Ceramics at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City. In 2013, she was recognized by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts as an Emerging Artist in her field, and is one of 25 recipients of the 2012. Gallaspy is currently an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation.

Giselle Hicks is originally from California, she received her BFA from Syracuse University and an MFA from NYSCC of Ceramics at Alfred University in New York. She has participated in various artist-in-residence programs including the Anderson Ranch Art Center, the Arts/Industry Program at the Kohler Company, The Clay Studio in Philadelphia and The Archie Bray Foundation. Hicks'work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Belger Arts Center in Kansas City, The John Michael Kohler Art Center and The Bellevue Art Museum and the Southwest School of Art. She is a full time studio artist living in Helena.

Kala Stein is from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and has recently relocated to Sonoma, California. Known for her porcelain installations and minimalist tableware, Stein has been recognized for her innovative, non-traditional mold making and casting techniques utilizing efficiency of molds while producing one-off pieces. In 2012 she co-founded Cuisine Culture, an initiative to join the slow food movement with handmade tableware. Stein received her BFA from SUNY New Paltz (2002) and her MFA from Alfred University (2009). She is currently the Director of Ceramics at the Sonoma Community Center.
