The Elkhorn Mountains southwest of Helena are home to the only designated wildlife management unit in the National Forest system established to optimize wildlife habitat and recreation opportunities. This hike to 8,500 foot Casey Peak, the site of an old lookout tower, offers great views of the Helena valley and the regeneration process occurring in the northern end of the Elkhorns 25 years after wildfires swept through the area in 1988.
