Aerial Views

September 25 - October 24 2015

Christopher Boyer - photos
Richard Parrish - glass

A fascination with aerial views of the landscape joins photographer Christopher Boyer and glass artist Richard Parrish. The natural environment and the evidence of human impact on that landscape emerge in both artists work, creating a compelling synchrony of contour and light.

Aerial photography combines the important data of a map while also facilitating a more intuitive understanding of place. It shows you the defining physical parameters of topography, climate, and habitat type while simultaneously communicating the more esoteric facets of a landscape: wildness, desolation, change.

"It is often difficult to just look at an aerial photograph without taking the time to travel through it. The aerial view has been a cornerstone of my land ethic ever since I earned my pilot's license during a Master's program in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology and political science. In the classroom, I learned the complex formulas describing erosion, deposition, shear stress, and sediment transport. In the air, I saw these complex relationships sculpted onto Oregon's coastal, mountain, and desert landscapes. More importantly, I learned about the context, and the interconnectedness of natural and human landscapes." Christopher Boyer

"As an artist and an architect, I find inspiration in both the human-made environment and in the vast landscape of the American west where I grew up. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of the constructed and natural environments, which I often explore in my work. I find that it is critical to my existence to make things with my hands, using real materials. I focus on the integration of meaning, design and technique in my glasswork and in the classes that I teach. I am particularly interested in the interaction of light and color in the environment and in my own work." Richard Parrish
