2019 Montana Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony Description:
2019 Montana Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony

Hosted by the Montana State Historic Preservation Office of the Montana Historical Society, the 2019 Montana Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on January 18 at the Myrna Loy Theater, 15 N. Ewing Street, in Helena, Montana.

This year, five award recipients are recognized at the biennial ceremony. They include: Montana State University professor Máire O’Neill Conrad for Outstanding Service to Historic Preservation—John N. DeHaas Memorial Award; Billings architect Randy Hafer for Outstanding Contributions to Historic Preservation; the McGraw Building in Fort Benton for Outstanding Historic Preservation Rehabilitation Project—Governor’s Award; the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Mountain-Prairie Region for Outstanding Historic Preservation Stewardship; and historic preservation photographer Kristi Hager of Missoula for Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation.

“Recognizing our outstanding heritage places and the special people who help preserve them is important to the success of historic preservation in Montana,” stated State Historic Preservation Officer Dr. Mark Baumler. “This is a very significant event for us, as well as a lot of fun.”

In addition to the awards, certificates will be presented to owners of 32 properties from 18 different counties listed in the National Register of Historic Places the past two years. Lewis and Clark County accounts for five of these National Register listings. Properties listed in Lewis and Clark County the previous two years include the Dorsey Grocery and Residence, the Crump-Howard House, the Aeronautics Operation Building, the Gehring Ranch, and the Western Clay Manufacturing Company, also known as the Archie Bray Foundation. Two properties, the Dorsey Grocery and Residence and the Crump-Howard House, are significant for their historic African American associations, while the Western Clay Manufacturing Company, previously listed in the National Register, was recognized at a National level for its importance to the ceramic arts industry.

One retiring Historic Preservation Review Board member, Zane Fulbright of Lewistown, will also be honored for his efforts over the years.

Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney and Montana Historical Society director Bruce Whittenberg will assist Dr. Baumler in making the presentations. The event is open to the public, and all with an interest in Montana history are encouraged to attend!
