Virtual Presentation with author Shonda Buchanan Description:
The Lewis & Clark Library is pleased to host a virtual presentation with author Shonda Buchanan on February 1st from 6:30-7:30PM. Join us for a riveting exploration of her memoir, Black Indian. The virtual presentation is free but registration is required: https://tinyurl.com/tx9rxrpn After registration, a link will be sent to you with login information.

Black Indian, searing and raw, is beautifully rendered and rippling with family dysfunction, secrets, deaths, drunks, and old resentments. Shonda Buchanan's memoir is an inspiring story that explores her family's legacy of being African Americans with American Indian roots and how they dealt with not just society's ostracization but the consequences of this dual inheritance.

Buchanan is a noted speaker as well as writer. In 2022 she gave lectures at Harvard, Yale and was the featured Keynote speaker for the Michigan Department of Education where she focused on how to infuse diversity into the K-12 classrooms. Her passion for diversity in the classroom and training for educators is the focus of her current book proposal. As an Oxfam Ambassador, Buchanan discusses human rights issues on a broader platform, raising awareness for social justice worldwide. At the heart of Buchanan’s work is the human narrative and how we communicate diversity, heritage, gender, women’s issues, inheritance, identity, race, and social justice; “We’re here to uncover hidden histories and share our stories.”

Pushcart Prize nominee, a USC Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities Fellow and a Department of Cultural Affairs City of Los Angeles (COLA) Master Artist Fellow, Shonda Buchanan is the author of five books, including the award-winning memoir, Black Indian. Shonda is the newest faculty member of the low residency MFA Program at Alma College. For more information about the program and the author, visit: https://lclibrary.libcal.com/event/9883286.
