This week Bill Whitsitt, member of the USS Montana Committee (Nuclear Attack Submarine 2020) will provide an overview of the construction and operational planning for the launch of this huge submarine. It sounds like a number of Navy members will attend. The last USS Montana was launched in 1908 and decommissioned in the 1920’s so this is really a big deal for the state.
Bill War and Jasen Egeline had a great presentation last week on the Cherry Park Playground project that Kiwanis is working on. Developing a park upgrade is not as easy as it used to be as there are many federal and state regulations to follow to insure it is handicap accessible, is compatible with special needs children and is safe for all users. If a person, group or business wants to donate sufficient funds to purchase one of the playground units a plaque will be placed on the equipment referencing the donors – the average cost of each piece of equipment is $3,000. HomeTown will be passing an envelope this week in support of the project.
03/29- John Moore – A Political Cartoon Career in the ‘80’s Revived in 2018.
There will also be an update on the new Vet Center that was recently opened. General Prendergast has been pushing for this along with other folks for 6 ½ years.
04/05- Mary Rutherford, CEO of the Montana Community Foundation.
In addition, Ron Waterman will provide a brief presentation on the Equity Fountain Project he and others are working on to replace the fountain that was removed from Hill Park last year.
04/12- Monica Lindeen, YWCA
U. S. Senate candidate Troy Downing will also be introduced and will answer a few questions as time allows.
04/19- Shodair Hospital Suicide Prevention Summit Recap
4/26- Youth Connections- Colleen Smith, Carroll Students and National Speaker from Chicago
Domingo Zapata will have a short presentation on the upcoming Law Enforcement Run for Special Olympics
5/03- Gordon Rogard- Troops to Teachers
05/10- Bill Avey, Forest Supervisor, regarding the recent fire seasons and fire costs as it relates to the management tactics the Forest Service takes on wildfires.
05/17- Helena Civic Television Update
Last week Loren Davis, owner of Davis Business Machines, celebrated being in business for 50 years. Loren started Davis Business Machines and has remained owner/operator for the entire 50 years. Loren also has offices in Great Falls, Bozeman and Butte and he has been a huge supporter of the Fairgrounds, military organization as well as dozens of other agencies and boards. In addition, he is a great guy and a regular attendee at HTH. I don’t think retirement is one of his goals.
Costco sold 100 million hotdogs in 2011 and are the 14th largest pizza seller in the U.S. despite not being a pizza parlor. Seems like I also heard they are the second large wine seller in the U.S.
I continue to hear the complaints related to the girls soccer coach (IR story) is basically one parent that was not happy with the amount of playing time and/or a couple other issues. Youth sports is an evolving activity with much greater pressure for coaches and players to win. Some kids now are playing a particular sport year around (at least training/practicing indoors during winter if it is a summer sport). In some cases parents are a bit over the top when it comes to coaching issues, calls by officials and generally how they act at sports events.
Speaking of sports, it was great to see the Grizzly basketball team in the March Madness group. I would have to say it does bother me a bit according to what I have been told, only one player on the team is from Montana and that person saw little if any playing time this year. Again, this is a case of wanting to win rather than developing a Montana based team – 50% should be a reasonable goal for Montana based team members.
