Montana and the Election of 1946
6:30 PM
Montana Historical Society (east of the Capitol)
Description:
Political campaigns in post-World War II Montana were full of controversy with wild accusations and intra-party feuds, and the U.S. Senate election in 1946 was critical to the political fortunes of two of the state’s iconic politicians— Burton K. Wheeler and Mike Mansfield. Marc C. Johnson, Wheeler’s biographer, will provide a presentation of the issues, conflicts and personalities that not only decided who would represent Montana in the Senate, but also shaped the state’s politics for decades. Johnson’s book – Political Hell-Raiser: The Life and Times of Senator Burton K. Wheeler of Montana – was published last year by the University of Oklahoma Press. His article on Montana politics in 1946 will appear in the fall issue of Montana The Magazine of Western History.
